Game Design at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHDK) is a comprehensive course of study leading to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. The focus is on gaining an in-depth understanding of the many topics connected with digital game worlds, their influence and potential.
Course content focuses on the social, artistic and technical elements of traditional and computer-based game design. Students learn how to manipulate digital media creatively. They gain essential skills in the design of virtual worlds and the realization of interactive games.
The course has a large practical component. It enables students to develop a broad spectrum of vital skills in the area of game design – from storytelling, 3D visualization, audio design and game mechanics through to programming. Graduates are then able to work as independent developers or gain sought-after jobs in the game sector. The large number of prizes won by our graduates to date is one indication of the success of our courses.
The Game Design course cooperates on research and development projects with a large number of partners from the arts, research and industry, with special reference to what are known as “serious games”.
The Game Design course supports and welcomes the GameCulture programme. After all, games are a particularly powerful medium with huge critical-constructive potential. This is of great importance to Switzerland as a development centre.
