Markus Gross is teaching Computer Sciences at ETH Zürich since 1994. In the last three years he builds up the Disney Research Lab in Zürich. On February 23rd he will get a Tech Oscar from the Academy of Motion and Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). As the Director of the Research Lab he will be awarded for the “Wavelet Turbulence Software”. This Software was adopted fairly quickly by the movie industry and used in motion pictures like Avatar or Kung Fu Panda. It allows rapid calculus and simulation of physical turbulences and shock waves initiated by explosion or other movements. This Award confirms that ETH-Zürich is producing high quality simulation tools, which are of huge importance to the entertainment industry, says Gross and points to the importance of scientific publication as a way to spread innovations in the markets.
